Many of us are familiar with the concept that in order to grow, you must get out of your comfort zone. The same is true for growing your network. Getting out of your networking comfort zone can mean a lot of things. As I make my way through Las Vegas networking events I continue to see the same people at the same events. While getting to know and continuing to grow your networking relationships is important, establishing new ones is equally as important.
To help you get out of your comfort zone and continue to grow your network try some of these techniques.
Psyche Yourself Up
Even the most seasoned networking veteran can talk themselves out of going to a new event. The internal dialogue you go through can literally cause you to talk yourself out of going. Instead of the usual negativity, tell yourself why the event will be successful. Focus on learning something new, meeting someone interesting, or being at a new venue.
Get Dressed to Impress
It’s amazing how a special scent, well-pressed blazer, interesting tie or elegant piece of jewelry can change your entire attitude. Having a conversation article in your ensemble is not only fun to wear, but also will give others something to talk about. Just make sure that you don’t take it too far. That giant sombrero you got on vacation in Cancun is only appropriate for a Fiesta inspired event.
RSVP & Keep Your Commitment
When you see a spark of interest in an event that you wouldn’t normally attend, RSVP and keep your commitment. Remember that the hosts of networking events put a lot of time into making certain their events are prepared for attendees. From seating to name badges, staffing to entertainment, hosting an event takes time for every attendee. After an event hosts may discredit the RSVPs that failed to attend, remove repeat offenders from future events, and even advise other hosts to do the same. Keeping your commitments shines positively on you, and word gets around, which reflects positively on you and the way you conduct business.
It might not always be easy, but getting out of your comfort zone in networking is essential to continuing to grow your network and expand yourself and your business. Make sure to follow us to learn new networking tips every week.
