AIA LV Women In Architecture – “Building Confidence For Effective Negotiation”

Women who ask for a raise are more than twice as likely to get one as women who don’t.
A decade ago, men negotiated pay increases 2 to 3 times more often than women. Today, women of all races are negotiating at similar rates as their male peers, which is a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, studies show that while men are expected to be assertive and advocate on their own behalf, women are often expected to be more collaborative and when they do negotiate for themselves it can be viewed unfavorably. Being able to negotiate is more than just a pay scale issue. In the design and construction world, we need to be able to calmly and confidently negotiate our ideas and debate the pros and cons of our designs as well.
